If you are thinking of creating a tournament with playoffs and want your teams to play as many matches as possible, add a consolation phase to your competitions. Create consolation matches, either a single playoff for the third and the fourth place, consolation semifinals or a full ranking.
If you have created a tournament with an elimination phase (groups and knockout, simple knockout or league with playoffs), you can select the number consolation matches in the drop-down menu Consolation Rounds.
1) 3rd and 4th place playoff
The consolation match for the 3rd and 4th place is played by those teams that have lost in the semifinals of the tournament. Many tournaments give prizes to the first three qualified teams. For this reason, this consolation match is a final sigh of motivation for those teams that remain on the verge of the final.
2) Consolation semifinals
The consolation semifinals take place once the quarterfinals have finished. The quarterfinals losers first play a consolation semifinals match followed by a match for the winners of the consolation semifinals for the 5th and the 6th place and a match for the losers of the consolation semifinals for the 7th and the 8th place. The consolation semifinals offer all quarterfinals losers two extra games in the competition.
3) All (Ranking)
In this setup, teams play to get a final position in the ranking of all teams in the tournament. The consolation matches are played by the losing teams in each knockout round. Therefore, the semifinals losers play for the 3rd and the 4th place. The quarterfinals losers play the consolation semifinals matches and the matches for the 5th and the 6th place and the 7th and the 8th place. The losers of a round of 8 play the consolation quarterfinals, the consolation semifinals and the games for the 9th-16th place.
